Annual Upper Yarra Dam Ride and Picnic

Although the initial weather forecast has been for a "couple of early showers clearing later", it had been progressively modified until it finally read something like "continuous heavy monsoonal rain, hail and lightning". When I pulled up at Launching Place I was encouraged to see 2Bob Leedham and Phil Jones already ready to start, although with the low overhead clouds getting blackerbythe minute I was no longer confident of a big turnout.

By the appointed starting time we had 9 riders ready to tackle the conditions, although we did make an early decision to reduce the ride to terminate at the Reefton Pub, rather than at the Upper Yarra Dam. That way, if the skies really opened up, we would be able to seek safety and warmth in front of the warm open fire. The tought of a nourishing Reefton Burger on a cold day was also quite appealing.

Our first stop of the day was at the Trailblazers Cafe to top up our depleted levels of blood caffeine before tackiling the main ride. Fortunately the heavy rain was holding off, although we were teased by a couple of passing light showers. I think everyone has been amazed at Glenda's tenacity and courage in attempting every scheduled ride and she once again did not disappoint. It seems that nothing can stop this girl - what a pity that Hooters can't catch a little of her attitude.

The outward ride was completed at a moderate pace with everyone in good spirits and lots of friendly chatter going on in the peloton. I really reckon this relatively short ride should be a compulsory requirement for anyone wanting to become a Ghost Rider. It's not that hard, but it does have enough short climbs to get your heart pumping freely and the surrounding scenery is magnificent. It's also a great feeling to be able to round the final bend and turn into the historic Reefton Pub for one of their delicious counter meals.

With a tummy full of burger it's a relief that the return ride is a little easier than the outward ride. We were soon back at Warburton and casting an anxious eye back to the heavens. The last time we did this ride we were all saturated in the final 10 minutes and we did not particularly want history to repeat itself. Rather than tempt fate we decided to keep riding and head straight back to the cars. This strategy worked well for evryon except 2Bob who was unfortunate enough to suffer our only puncture of the day. I was just glad it wasn't me for once.

Although we didn't quite make it to the Upper Yarra it was still a very enjoyable ride.
